What is a Domain Name?

A domain name is formatted like : domain.com. This is registered through an ICANN accredited registrar or a reseller of an accredited registrar. The .com part of the domain is the TLD part (top level domain). There are many TLDs available to customers these include: .com, .net, .org, etc. There are also ccTLDs (country code top level domains). These would include: .ws, .ca, .uk, .co, and many others. The most popular domain extension is .com.

What are Sub-Domains?

Sub-domains are parts of a domain name. These are formatted like blog.freehostreview.com - the TLD is .com. The domain is freehostreview and the sub-domain is blog. The most popular form of a subdomain is www. - which usually points to the non-www version of the website. This is done through A records in the DNS server. A records and CNAME records allow subdomains to be created and pointed to a folder on the same server as the parent domain or a different IP address altogether.

What do Domains Cost?

When the domain name registry was created in the 90s - the first mainstream registrar was Network Solutions. NetSol was originally chartered to manage the domain registry and continues to operate it today. Approx $6 per domain name is given to NetSol for management of the registry. There is also a mandatory domain fee on all domains regulated by ICANN of $0.20/year. This is to cover ICANN costs of regulation. So the base price of a domain name is always $6.20. The rest is markup for the registrar. GoDaddy.com has some of the cheapest domain names at $9.99 and $6.99 for transfers (includes a 1 year extension).
